UMDUZI

Total Time: 54mins. Available on cassette only.

This album is a real mixed bag, from Afro to flamenco to rock to jazz-rock to blues to reggae, with 9 tacks being songs with vocals and the other 4 instrumentals. The music was recorded from Sept. to Dec. '85. I designed the cover, produced the tape and released it in Jan. '86. Most of the tracks I re-recorded and re-released in Feb.'87.

1. UMDUZI - I composed at Umduzi,an untouched African village in the Transkei, Southern Africa. A stunningly beautiful and peaceful paradise. The music has an Afro-Brazilian rhythm with an African chant praising water, sky and earth. I played guitars, flute, percussion, mbira and vocals.

2. FREELY EVERGROW - was the theme song for a rock-opera-ballet, for which I wrote the music, in 1973. There is a Swazi chant and the feel is Afro-Rock. Indira sang harmony and I did the rest (guitars, bass, drum programs and vocals).

3. GITANA - (means gypsy in Spanish) An instrumental with Spanish-Flamenco feel, composed whilst travelling in South America,1980. Don Ruttan plays flute, and I play
guitar,bass and percussion.

4. HUMANS GO BESERK - This is about the endless TV news, depicting the horrors of war and terrorism. It really hits home, turning the guts. A sad, slow rock song.

5. FREEMAN - inspired by the Toa. A jazzy feel with guitars, bass, drums and vocals.

6. BILINGA BLUES - written in '85 whilst living on the Gold Coast. Anugraha plays some lovely blues violin and I layered guitars, flute, bass and percussion.

7. FEEL YOUR SOUL - composed in '85. A very danceable, high energy, rocksong expressing the joy of life.

8. LIVE IN THE WORLD - "as if you were the sky" - a Tantric message inspired by Baghwan Shree Rajneesh. A lively reggae number.

9. FLAMINGO FLAMENCO - one accoustic guitar with three electric guitars in stereophonic harmony. A flamenco-rock instrumental.

10. HEY LOVER - the lyrics written by a close friend Les and I about brotherly, sisterly and masterly love. A straight out rock song.

11. ON WITH THE DANCE - another high energy rock song from the rock-opera-ballet "Freely Evergrow".

12. STARRY NIGHTS - I composed in Chile '80 under a cold, crystal clear, night sky. A jazz-rock instrumental with high flying, harmonized electric guitars and a solid rhythm.

13. FLOWING TO THE SEA - a floaty, flowing, mellow song about Tantra and enjoying life. Includes flute, guitar and vocals.

ETHEREAL STREAM

Total Time: 54mins. Available on cassette only.

This tape comprises of a selection of music I composed between '76 and '84.
"This Side" was recorded in Cape Town, South Africa, April '84 at UCA 24 track studios.

The music was used for a mountain walking program on South African TV.

Click on the following tracks to hear the music

1. NO ONE ELSE - has a north-east Brazilian rhythm called a "Baiao".I composed it while travelling in Brazil.I played an mbira (an African instrument), guitar and percussion. Paul Kimmel played flute and Amano Wood played sax and bongos. The feel is Afro-Brazilian .

2. LOTUS FLOWER - is based on an Indian "raga". It was recorded live in the studio with only guitar and Paul playing the flighty flute.

3. DANCE OF THE DOLPHINS - composed whilst living on an island in southern Chile. I would sit on the front porch at sunset playing guitar to the dolphins dancing in the waters with the spectacular backdrop of irridecent, snowy, volcanic peaks of the mainland reflected in the still ocean. This breath taking daily scene provided the ultimate inspiration. We recorded this live in the studio, just guitar and superb flute by Paul.

4. FLEETING FOREST - While living in the most beautiful, mountainous forests of Cape Town '76 I wrote many an inspired piece. This is one of them. Paul's flutes are uplifting and awesome.

5. HEAVEN ON EARTH - My friend Les Shill wrote these beautiful lyrics about which I created the music. A song of our common love for nature and this miraculous life.Real heart music. I sang the main vocals with Paula on harmony and Paul Kimmel on flute.

"That Side" of the tape consists of one single long track "ETHEREAL STREAM". I composed and played it spontaneously in Midnight Flyer studios, Johannesburg, July '83, for a video on meditation. I began with a drone on a string synthesiser. Next I layer an 11/4 arpegio on steel string guitar. Then I played flute and finaly I played slide guitar.
In May '85 I produced and released this, my first album, on cassette, in Australia.
